Products for Infants: Getting Started

“What? I have to start cleaning my newborn’s mouth, on top of the never ending list of other things I’m trying to learn as a new mom?” I know it seems a little extra or unnecessary, but I promise there are many benefits to doing this at such a young age. To learn more about how to use the products recommended below, please read my blog on infant oral care. Keep in mind, no toothpaste is necessary at this stage of life!! However, one of the purchase options below does include a toothpaste that you can introduce once your baby gets their first tooth. (Only use a smear, about the size of a grain of rice)

My top 3 products for starting your infant’s oral hygiene routine:

Infants-toddlers:

The products below can be used during the transition from zero to one or more teeth. This age varies but is often between age 6 months to a year or so and can be used for as long as you choose. Reasons for changing the toothbrush could be:

  • you are keeping it fun and exciting for children- offering them something new!

  • realizing that the child has outgrown the toothbrush you were using

  • the toothbrush has been worn out and needs to be replaced (bristles should not be flared out- and children always bite down, so they get worn faster)

  • something new has come to market

  • your child is starting to get molars and you need something that can reach in the back better

^^ just to name a few examples.

Manual Toothbrushes:

Getting Started: From 1st tooth- 3 years old

I started brushing my younger child’s teeth with these the moment she got her first tooth. I like these because they are easy to grip, colorful, and she loved them… it was different than what I was using for my older child so they did not get them mixed up.

When my child started to gain independence and struggle to allow me to help her, I handed her one of these for her own use, while I went in with another (same) toothbrush. See video demonstration.

Another great option. I really grew to like this brand as a new mom and kids really gravitate toward fun themed products, so this should do the trick! Remember, you do not need toothpaste before their teeth erupt. Once they get their first tooth, the amount of toothpaste to use is a smear… about the size of a grain of rice. Make sure it is not fluoridated, as they are unable to spit. If you choose to use fluoride later down the road, it should be when they can spit.

Recommended Age: 1-4 years old

A great baby product brand (IMO) from bottles to toothbrushes, I have loves their products. Easy to grip and fun characters!

I started using this brand for toothpaste when looking for cleaner brands and fell in love. This is just a cute, waste reducing company and I have really grown to love their products!

Recommended Age: 4-7 years old

A light weight, bamboo, soft bristled toothbrush, great for kids!

Electric Toothbrushes:

The following options are PERFECT for ages 1-4:

MY TOP PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION!

Okaaaayyyy… this is our current toothbrush and I can not say enough about how much I love these! The light alone was enough for me to purchase, but to have cute animal themes, the ability to suction so they stand up and to vibrate- making it fun for littles?? They are perfect for travel, at home, on the go… I have a video of us using these in the car at night and we can see perfectly! SOLD!

Recommended Age: 3+

This is recommended for ages 3+, but depending on your child’s readiness level (for an electric toothbrush), you could start slightly earlier than this. A great suggestion for a 3rd, 4th, or even 5th birthday gift. Comes in different colors and coco melon themes!

Okay- how many Frozen fans do we have out there? I know my girls love these sisters! This was the first electric toothbrush I got for my older daughter… and it was a huge hit. Having their favorite characters on their toothbrush can significantly improve our kid’s motivation to use it! Bonus: play some music from their favorite show for them to dance to while brushing!

Having your child’s favorite characters on their toothbrush can significantly improve your kid’s motivation to use it! Bonus: play some music from their favorite show for them to dance to while brushing! Extra Bonus: make it last 2 minutes!

Here’s a fun toothbrush for kids between ages 4-7. The ability to decorate it how they choose is a great way to motivate them to want to use it! Plus sonicare is one of the top recommended brands for electric toothbrushes, so you can’t go wrong!

Clean Toothpaste Products:

These are great brands if you are looking for more natural options, without fluoride.

For myself, I have recently decided to not use fluoride in my children’s products, however I do encourage you to do your own research, discuss with your dental team and come up with your own conclusion about what you would like to use for yourself and your family.

The flavor free is for any child that is sensitive to tastes.

If your child is prone to cavities, then you may want to consider something with additional assistance to prevent cavities, such as a biocompatible ingredient Nanohyydroxyapatite (nHAp).

Again, be sure to discuss options in greater detail with your child’s dental team.

Kid Flossers:

For kid flossers: I do recommend getting a clear container to keep on your bathroom counter (scroll down to the bathroom accessories section of my shop for examples available for purchase) so that kids can see the flossers in the container and want to use them! I also provide some cabinet and drawer storage options to stay organized!

It is important to start flossing your child’s teeth as soon as they have two teeth touching one another. You’d be amazed at how much food I pull from my toddler’s teeth. This food being left behind will eventually cause decay- so get your little one used to the routine of flossing!

(PRO TIP: Floss in front of them so that they are encouraged to copy you! WIN WIN!)

I can not express enough how much I love this company. I love what they stand for and how they package their product, attempting to be as waste-less as possible. They are also adorable and my kids love to use them. I have a product review on my social media pages, and their packaging includes a pamphlet about how they plant a tree for every package sold.

Great travel item! This brand started off as my favorite toothpaste brand, and it led me to try their other products. These are individually wrapped floss picks which I have in all of our travel bags, in my car, purses and diaper bags.

Still free of fluoride and made with recycled plastic… these are flavored in case your child needs something more to get motivated to floss.

Another fluoride free, but flavored option + a cute theme that kids will love!

TIP: when flossing with these, play a game that goes “oooh there’s a fishy in there… the shark is hungry… chomp chomp”.
